I'm sure that all of you metal detector users out there have
(or should have) what is commonly referred to as a "war bag".
This bag contains all the items that you need and some you
don't in your day-to-day hunts.
This bag can be grabbed at a moments notice or kept in your
car or truck for easy access. In it, you would keep items
such as diggers, extra batteries, water or anything you think
you will need for a hunt.
But I am going to take this one step further. I am going to
carry my "warbag" with me at all times on a hunt. I am going to
wear mine, I call it a "warvest" Before you laugh or think of the Michelin tire man, it isn't
like that. What I am talking about is a common ordinary fishing vest.
Yes, a common, easy to find fishing vest. It is lightweight, cheap,
and most important, has lots of pockets. These pockets are
all sizes, perfect for all the items we metal detectorists seem
to need to carry.
You can find one anywhere for under $20. I got mine at Wal-Mart.
There are many styles and colors, get one that you like and
fits good. They can be worn in hot or cold weather. On warmer days
wear it over a tee shirt. On colder days wear it under a heavier,
warmer coat. You can just unzipper you coat and have instant
access to all your items in the vest. Here are some of the items
I keep in my vest:
Small Swiss army knife
Snacks
My Metal Detecting Business cards
Batteries
Maps
GPS (and extra batteries for it)
Compass (for use with the GPS)
Binoculars
Disposable Camera
Small bottle for storing finds
Small notepad and pencil
Some other items you can add are:
Aspirin or medicine you may be taking
Small First Aid kit
Matches
Insect Repellent
I know that this list is not complete.
You can add or remove items as needed. Granted not everyone
will take a GPS or camera or binoculars. They do add weight
but I feel the extra weight is small compared to the quick
access when I need them. Also, having the pills you need
quickly just may save your life. Plus I also use my vest when
I mountain bike, and like the feeling that I must have them.
I feel that once you try this you will wonder how you ever
hunted without one and that it is another way to make your
treasure hunting day more enjoyable. Thanks for reading
and Happy Hunting!
