Commission

To Commission an Icon

Since I frequently get requests for information about the icons found on this site, I thought it might be a good idea to offer some information on commissioning an icon.

The original icons I create are produced through the ancient processes and canons of traditional iconography using modern materials such as acrylic paints and gold leaf on cabinet quality birch plywood. There is no catalog of icons that are available since most of my work is created in response to a specific request. If you have a specific image in mind, providing a copy would make the process simpler. At the same time, I have some icons in my studio that are already available, the subjects and prices can be discussed if you would email or call me. Also, a limited number of prints are available through a friend who photographs my work and I can put you in touch with him.

Icons are usually painted on wooden panels. These are usually rectangular, the dimensions of which are based upon a ratio of 3 to 4 in keeping with the ancient concept of the most aesthetically pleasing forms. Other shapes and sizes are available, as are panels with raised borders. Naturally, the more complex the materials and preparation, the higher the price.

Every icon that I paint engages over thirty years of experience, thus an "hourly rate" is almost impossible to estimate. The prices for an icon usually start at about $350 for a simple composition on a 9"x12" panel. Shipping, delivery, packing, insurance, and any taxes are not included. The specifics can be discussed and prices are offered on a case by case basis. My back log of work extends to about nine months. If you have an urgent request, an additional fee will apply. I will be as clear as possible about the deadlines and what I am able to do.

On larger jobs, I am able to create sketches, do research and make presentations. Since the labor can be extensive, I ask for a retainer which would be applied to the final cost should you decide to proceed with the project. Keep in mind that I am an iconographer, not an architect or an interior designer. Iconography has clear limits. I will do as much as possible to facilitate your needs so long as it does not seriously compromise the canons of traditional iconography.
