Mulberry Senior Citizens Center is a home away from home for many seniors in Wilkinsburg and the surrounding area, reaching out to our diverse multicultural community since September 1972. The Center began as a mission of Mulberry Presbyterian Church and is one of the oldest centers in Pittsburgh. Our members live out our logo statement, "Bearing Fruit For All Seasons," where they enrich one another's lives through friendship and volunteer service. Delicious home-cooked meals, good entertainment, spiritual refreshment and interesting activities are a hallmark of Mulberry Center.

The Center's Purpose
  • to provide social and spiritual enrichment for senior citizens
  • to speak out and work for the best interests of senior citizens
  • to offer cenior citizens ways of using free time creatively and in useful service
  • to utilize neighborhood facilities and services in order to meet seionr citizens' needs.

Eligibility

Anyone 55 years of age and older is cordially invited to join. We have no membership dues. Membership is not required for our services. We do accept voluntary donations toward our meals and services.

Location/Hours

We're located in the basement of the First Presbyterian Church of Edgewood, 120 E. Swissvale Avenue, next to the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf. There are two entrances: a ramped entrance on School Street (located between the church and the School for the Deaf) - there are steps inside; and the handicapped accessible ramp behind the church off School Street.

We are open Tuesday and Thursday from 9AM to 3PM, and when staffing is available, also on scheduled Mondays with the same hours.

Our Weekly Activities Include:

Freshly prepared, nutritious meas served by our volunteer kitchen crews.

Health and exercise programs, including senior cize, walking, and occasional line dancing; Medical Roundtable and special programs, as well as our semi-annual Health Fair sponsored by UPMC. Blood pressure screenings available every Tuesday.

Crafts and quilting, knitting and sewing instruction, and lap robe sewing (made for local nursing homes).

Bus trips within a day's drive of Pittsburgh April through November - an activity highlight.

Spiritual renewal through our weekly prayer circle and Bible study led by our community's pastors.

Music, including our Thursday hymnsing and singalong and our wonderful Mulberry Chorus (which performs in-house and around the community).

Recreation, such as cards, Bingo, large-print library, travel and educational videos, and friendly conversation! Monthly parties and programs.

Annual Fall Bazaar (our biggest fundraising event).

Other - seasonal tax assistance through VITA volunteers.

Social Services

Information and referral, and counseling, especially in the areas of health, housing, insurance, finances, Medicare, and senior advocacy, are available through our in-house social worker.

Volunteers

Volunteers are the hidden strength of Mulberry Center! Our members take great satisfaction in knowing they have an offering to make that contributes to the wonderful level of service we offer to our members. Volunteers are always welcome!

Funding

Mulberry Senior Citizens Center is a mission of Mulberry Ministries, Inc., and, thus, has non-profit status so all gifts are tax deductible.

Gifts of support are essential to our ability to provide our diversity of services. We are supported through the kind donations and memorial gifts of our members and friends of this ministry and through grants given by churches, businesses, and foundations interested in supporting urban ministries. We are also supported by donations through the Pittsburgh Presbytery.

Bequests are a wonderful way to remember your community senior center and are very much appreciated. Checks for donations and memorials should be made out to
