PRAYER
Send us, O Lord, as your messengers, to hearts without homes, to lives without love, and to a multitude without direction.
Send us to children whom no one has blessed, to the hungry whom no one has fed, to the fallen whom no one has raised, to the desolate whom no one has consoled.
Light your fire on the altar of our hearts so that others may receive its warmth. Let your light shine through our souls so that others may see the path before them. Keep our compassion and discernment ready, our will fervent and alive, our hands reach to help our brothers and sisters in their time of need. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

SCRIPTURE LESSON: Matthew 4:1-11
COMMENTARY: [by Rev. Mattner]
Today is Ash Wednesday and we begin our Lenten pilgrimage. During this 40 day period, in a most deliberate way, we focus on our need to grow in the love of God and as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. It is appropriate for us to look at the temptations Jesus experienced as He began His earthly ministry. I think it is rather interesting, and no coincidence, that Jesus' experience in the wilderness was 40 days long, the same number of days we have to make our Lenten journey.
For Jesus, the 40 days He spent in the wilderness was a time of discernment and decision making. By that I mean, now that He was to begin the work God had sent Him to accomplish, Jesus had to decide how He was going to do that work. What methods would He use to save the world? What way was He to pursue as He worked to win people over for God? I mean, if you are going to be the Savior of the world, you better figure out how to do it. Through a time of prayer, fasting and testing, Jesus discovered the answers to His questions and made conscious decisions about how He would go about being the Savior of the world. During His time of testing, Jesus submitted every desire, idea, thought and feeling to the word and will of God. In other words, He spent His 40 days in prayer and Bible study, subjecting everything He was experiencing to God's careful scrutiny through prayer and His Word. Then once He discovered what God wanted and expected, Jesus obeyed and did things God's way.
I want to invite you to use these 40 days from Ash Wednesday to Easter as a time of discovery and decision making just as Jesus did. Use this time to get to know God better and find out just how He wants you to be His loving child and faithful disciple. Like Jesus did, spend time every day in prayer and Bible study groups at the Church or attend Sunday School. Most assuredly, make sure you regularly and consistently worship God each Sunday with other followers on the journey, as well as spend time alone with God every day.
Lent is a time of testing and examination that will enable us to grow in God's love and become more faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. Use this time well!
PRAYER: Lord, Jesus, help us to follow your example by spending these next 40 days in a
time of prayer, Bible study and testing so we can discover more fully than ever before what it
means to be a faithful disciple of your's, as well as more effective ways of exercising our
discipleship. Save us from the temptation to avoid this important work. Keep us in the
wilderness and help us emerge more faithful and obedient, AMEN!

SCRIPTURE: Matthew 4:12-35
KEY VERSE: "Come along with me and I will show you how to fish for the souls of men!"
(Matthew 4:19 The Book)
COMMENTARY: [by M Smith]
Jesus, recovering from the Temptation, begins His ministry. Having "lost" John the Baptist who
was imprisoned by Herod, Jesus returns to the Galilean countryside. (So he fulfills the prophecy
of Is. 9:12). Soon Jesus confronts Simon Peter and his brother, Andrew, with His challenge to
become fishers for the souls of men. Before long they are joined by James and John, sons of
Zebedee, also fishermen. So the group of teacher and disciples set out for the ministry of
preaching, teaching and healing among the multitudes who sought out the Teacher-healer.
Did Jesus recognize the ability and energy in these young men? Undoubtedly. And did they find
something so appealing in his words and ways that they would follow Him without question?
That is indeed what happened. They followed where He led -- to meet the multitudes -- teaching,
preaching, and healing -- meeting the need wherever it was.
Pondering this call of Jesus and the reaction of these men, makes me wonder who I would react
given the same circumstances. Are my circumstances really a lot different from theirs? Do I
hear Jesus call to me -- in my busyness? Do I sense the needs of those around me -- even for a
word of understanding or affirmation? Do I ask the Master what He expects of me?-- AND-- do
I leave my "nets" to answer His call?
PRAYER: Jesus calls us o'er the tumult of our life's wild restless sea; day by day his sweet voice soundeth, saying, "Christian, follow me?
Jesus calls us! by thy mercies, Savior, may we hear thy call, give our hearts to thine obedience, serve and love thee best of all.

COMMENTARY: [by K Means]
When I read these verses many things came to my mind. I can remember sitting in church when I
was about 11-12 and listening to the service, but also having my mind wander as all of us has had
this happen. Our old church had many beautiful stained glass windows, but the one I remember
looking at most was the one of Jesus on the Mount. His face looked so peaceful and I would
wonder what it would have been like to be there with him. I guess I wondered how his disciples
would feel when they would be taught the Beatitudes. The one that comes to mind is "Blessed
are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted." How many of us hasn't mourned the loss of a
loved one? -- a husband, a wife, parents, a child, the loss of a job, a home or even a pet. All we
needed was someone to put their arms around us and tell us things would be fine. It might take a
while for our prayers aren't always answered right away. These people are our disciples and don't
know it. It doesn't take much to be a disciple. Just a hug, a handshake, a pat on the back, a
simple smile or a kind word. Let us be a disciple in our own way not just for those who mourn
but for those who just need a kind word or a little help.
PRAYER: Dear God,
Help us to be your disciples not just for those who mourn. Let us be disciples also for those who
need their spirits lifted up, for those who are persecuted for their belief in you. Guide all of us so
that we may be truly the kind of disciples you would want us to be.

COMMENTARY: [by B Rudy]
A lot of people say that the Bible is outdated and not relevant to the present today. These
scripture texts prove that theory wrong. The Lord gives rules on everything including adultery,
divorce, taking false oaths, retaliation to loving your enemies. We have all been affected by
these situations in some way.
The one that I have found God's word to be true is in retaliation and loving your enemies. It's so
hard to want to get even for some who has hurt you. But PRAISE GOD for his presence of
forgiveness! It will set you free as it did me!
The last verse says it all. "Therefore, you are to be perfect as your heavenly father is perfect."
That is a tall order to fulfill but a goal we can strive for.
PRAYER: Dear precious Heavenly Father,
We thank you for always being there for us in every area of our lives. You are truly an awesome,
loving, and forgiving God. Thank you, Lord! In his wonderful name, Amen.

COMMENTARY: [J Matta]
This is an extensive piece of the Gospel to comment on...so I feel a general approach to these
verses may be the best course. The first thing that strikes me is the simplicity of the Gospel. But
this can be very misleading. To communicate this point, I am going to cite a passage from "My
Utmost for His Highest Journal" (Oswald Chambers). It states, "A man who has not been born of
the Spirit of God will tell you that the teachings of Jesus are simple. But when you are baptized
with the Holy Ghost, you will find 'clouds and darkness are around about him'" (Psalm 97:2).
When we come into close contact with the teachings of Jesus Christ, we have our first insight
into this aspect of things. The only possibility of understanding the teachings of Jesus is by the
light of the Spirit of God on the inside.
PRAYER: Dear Father,
Please illuminate your word within me. Help me to read, comprehend, and then manifest your
word through my behaviors. Let me humble myself and recognize that nothing is possible when
I attempt to rely on my own strength, but know that through you everything is possible.

Don't worry. Your Heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need food, shelter and
clothing, and He will give them to you if you give him first place in your life and live as he wants
you to. Don't be anxious about tomorrow, God will take care of your tomorrow, too. Live one
day at a time.
PRAYER: Lord, help us to be anxious about nothing and put all our faith and trust in you. Help us to live as you want us to live and please forgive us when we fail to do the right things. We ask all this in your Blessed and Holy Name. Amen.

KEY VERSE: "Every one then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house upon the rock."
(Matthew 7:24)
COMMENTARY: [by S Glasser]
This entire passage is a good example on how we need to trust in the Lord. Just as Jesus was
speaking to the crowds as he spoke these words, he speaks to us with these words of wisdom. As
faithful disciples of Jesus Christ, we need to continue to trust in the Lord and live by these words
in our every day life.
This passage also provides a good lesson on discernment. In all that we do we need to make
choices. There is right and wrong. As disciples of Jesus we need to be able to make the right
choices and live our lives in the way that is pleasing to him.
PRAYER: Dear Lord,
May we trust in you always as you are the rock on which we should build our lives. Continue to
guide us as we make the right choices in life that are pleasing to you. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Faith is a powerful weapon. It can combat any obstacle. Faith is also a miracle causing "thing".
Just having faith could cause countless miracles. Just like the man who had leprosy, he had faith
and he got healed, and so did the Centurion's slave and the many. Faith is caused by just
believing. So believing can cause great things.
PRAYER: Dear God,
Our believing in you causes faith. And our faith cause your miracles. Just showing us a miracles
makes our faith rise. And thank you God for your love which causes faith. Amen.

Jesus had specific ideas about how, those that say they will follow Jesus, are to do and act. He
would be first in anything they do. He wants us to have faith and not be frightened when a
miracle happens, as the people were when the herd of pigs rushed over the cliff.
PRAYER: Dear Lord,
Thank you for all our blessings, and help us to have faith to help us through our troubles. Amen.

SCRIPTURE: Matthew 9
COMMENTARY: [by C Rudy]
This chapter summarized in verse 35 paraphrased Jesus was going everywhere to teach, proclaim
the Gospel, heal and deliver. This was His whole ministry. Chapter 9 is a sample of His life.
Here He healed 5 different sicknesses, called Matthew to be a disciple, taught and showed His
omniscience (verse 4).
Verse 36 shows us His heart's compassion for all people to be saved - that is you and me. But the
challenge for us to live this life is in the last 2 verses. To be workers for the kingdom, bringing
in the harvest is our job as Christians. Have you shared the message of Jesus Christ and His
saving grace with anyone today?
PRAYER: Lord Jesus,
Help me to be that harvester for your kingdom. Give me the courage to share with people. In
Your Holy Name, Amen.

SCRIPTURE: Matthew 10:1-23
COMMENTARY: [by D Redshaw, Sr.]
What we have here, is a "How to" reading.
We find Jesus giving instructions to the twelve who are named in verses 2, 3 and 4. He is giving
them authority to heal, to raise, to cure leprosy, and to cast out demons. Next, he tells them to
proceed "empty handed". "Take nothing with you. Everything needed will be provided. Next,
those whom you stay with, upon leaving, you will bless. If you are not welcomed, shake the dust
of that place from your feet, and leave." Next he gives a warning, "You are being sent among
WOLVES, therefore, you must be as wary as serpents." And lastly He says, If (and it's a big if),
"If you must stand trial, do so willingly...you can witness for ME, to the world, and you will have
the Spirit of the Heavenly Father, speaking through you. " and a last footnote, "If you are being
persecuted in one city, flee from there to another city."
All of these are good common sense instructions, and they still hold true today, for any who
would undertake to spread the word of Jesus.
PRAYER: Our Father,
Be with us who do not travel, and have not the opportunity to "spread your word". Help us here,
where we find ourselves, to tell your story, to those who wish to hear. Assure us, that we too,
will have the Spirit of the Heavenly Father, speaking through us, as we tell the story of Jesus.
Amen.

COMMENTARY: [by C Blakley]
Jesus continues to instruct His twelve disciples as He is preparing to send them out among the people. He tells them not to be afraid because they may feel they're not really teachers, because "there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known." Do not be afraid, either, if the head of the house has been called Beelzebub (the Prince of Demons) because what is said while witnessing to the members of the household may surely cause them to want to follow Jesus' ways.
Today, we, as Christ's followers, must not be afraid to acknowledge Him and be a witness in our
daily living. This may not always be easy. Most likely it will not be easy. It could turn away
those who do not choose to accept the Lord as their Savior, those being friends and even family.
But we are assured that whoever loses his life for Jesus' sake, will find it!
PRAYER: Dear Lord,
Let the old saying that "actions speak louder than words" one day be a fitting one for me as I
attempt to live my life as you would like me to. Amen.

COMMENTARY: [by J Loehr]
Jesus gave his disciples instructions then left to preach and teach other towns.
When Jesus heard about works of Jesus, he sent disciples to see him and when questioned, they
were told to tell him what they had seen and heard. The blind could see, the deaf could hear, the
lame could walk, lepers were cleansed, the dead raised to life and the Good News was preached
to the poor.
In some towns when Jesus preached and performed miracles, the people had not turned from
their sins. This did not please Jesus, so on Judgement Day, there would be no mercy shown
them.
Here at our Church we can be disciples doing the work of Jesus on the Care Team.
Jesus said, "Come to me all who are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest."
PRAYER: Heavenly Father,
Help me to walk daily with you and do your will. Amen.

SCRIPTURE: Matthew 12:1-21
COMMENTARY: [by R Glasser]
In reading this passage of scripture there were several thoughts that came to my mind. First, this
reminded me of the very familiar phrases of "judge not lest you be judged." The Pharisees were
always looking for a reason to condemn the work that Jesus was doing and to find reasons to
arrest him when they also were guilty of sins. How often do we criticize others for things that
they do when if we would look at ourselves, we may see things that we do not like?
Second, I was reminded that when we do good deeds, we should attempt to do them in secret and
not boast about them. When Jesus performed miracles he often would instruct people not to talk
about them. When we do things for someone else, do we do it quietly or do we boast about what
we have done?
Finally, Jesus reminds us that when we reach the final victory the rewards will be worth all the
trials and tribulations that we have experienced in our day to day living.
PRAYER: Father,
Help us to live the life that you would have us live. Give us grace to show respect and
compassion to others in our day to day living. Give us the confidence to do your will and not
seek rewards and accolades for what we do. Grant us restraint and wisdom in our dealings with
other people and help us not to judge people for the things that they may do or say, for we know
that the final accounting will come to all of us on that final day of judgment. We ask all these
things through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

I think these verses are a way that God is telling us who know him what the kingdom of heaven
is like, but is also telling all of the people who don't know him what heaven is like also. In these
verses Jesus explained to the people in parables. I think these parables deal with our lives. We
always have to deal with problems or people who are enemies in this life, but in the end, we truly
do win because we will live eternally in heaven. Can they say the same?
PRAYER: Dear Lord,
Help us to know and understand your word better. Help us to also go through our lives living by
your word. Thank you, God. Amen.

COMMENTARY: [by M Schoff]
Jesus told stories called parables. They all had a spiritual meaning. Sometimes even His
disciples did not understand. He carefully explained to them the meaning of the parables.
Today, we have Bibles that tell us about the parables Jesus taught. The kingdom of Heaven is
liken to many things as stated in these scriptures.
Heaven will be a wonderful place, but how do we get there? We must give our hearts to Jesus
and follow Him. He is the way, the truth and the Light. As we follow His teachings, we should
shun evil desires and try to the best of our ability do the things we think Jesus would have us do.
As we strive to do His will, we find ourselves on a journey that will lead us toward the Kingdom
of Heaven.
There may not be golden streets, but there will be a mansion for each and every one of us, if it
were not so, He would have told us. Jesus went to prepare our mansions for us.
During this Lenten season (and always), remember, "Be not weary in well doing, for in due
season, we shall reap, if we faint not." (Galatians 6:9)
Remember the golden rule - " Do unto others as you would have others do for you." (Matthew
7:12)
"Trust in the Lord with thy whole heart and lean not on your own understanding." (Proverbs 3:5)
PRAYER: Father God,
We ask your help in understanding the parables you taught. We want to follow you and ask for
guidance in what we say and do. We want to be doers of your Word and not hearers only. Thank
you for all you do, and we ask that you be with us always. In Jesus' Blessed Name, Amen.

Webster's Dictionary defines a disciple as -- a follow of Jesus Christ in his lifetime -- one who
accepts & assists in the spreading of the doctrines of others.
Matthew 14:13-21 tells the parable of Jesus feeding the 5000. Jesus taught in parables of earthly
stories with significant heavenly meaning -- he was looking for those with ears to hear and eyes
to see. As we read and study these parables today, we too, can be led to a deeper meaning &
dedication as faithful disciples.
The feeding of the 5000 shows Jesus as the supplier of human need and that he truly is the bread
of life. To follow Jesus as faithful disciples requires self-denial, complete dedication and willing
obedience.
PRAYER: Dear God,
Thank you for giving us the many opportunities to spread your good word to others. Grant us the
ability to witness to others, showing them by our words, deeds & actions that following you
brings joy & peace into our daily lives. May your grace and blessing be upon all who sincerely
love our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

My passage of Mark talks about Jesus walking on the water to join his disciples who were
crossing the sea to Capernaum. When the disciples saw this, they were frightened by assuming
they must be seeing a ghost. Jesus quickly calmed their fears. Then at Peter's request, Jesus
enabled him to walk on the water. All was well until Peter was distracted by the wind and began
to sink.
Peter and his friends, being the first Christians, are able to excuse their behavior to the fact that
they were just learning about Christ's awesome powers. But time hasn't strengthened our faith
much. For centuries we've had the Bible to teach us and we too would be frightened to witness a
supernatural event.
But I believe it is through Peter that we can learn the most here. Peter and many of us share the
same problem of being easily sidetracked. While doing the impossible, Peter's attention was
turned towards the harsh wind and suddenly the impossible became just that. We can compare
the wind to personal problems, work situations, chaotic world events, etc. Sometime life can
overwhelm us to the point of feeling hopeless. But the Bible clearly tells us that all things are
possible through Christ. He is in control and if we stay focused on him, he will guide and
empower us to conquer life's obstacles.
PRAYER: Dear Lord,
Please don't ever let me forget that this IS your world and whether good or bad times you are here
by my side. Amen.

The main theme to me in Matthew 15:1-20 is cited in verse 18: "But the things that come out of
the mouth come from the heart and these make a man unclean. For out of the heart come evil
thoughts." As Jesus continues to list these evil thoughts in verses 19-20. How do I as a Christian
try to live faithfully to Jesus Christ - I pray! Prayer strengthens me. Prayer guides me how to be
more Christlike. I feel right now my discipleship is displayed through my actions. I am not good
at quoting verses or being "theological" but my discipleship strength lies in trying to keep my
words and actions "clean".
The second part of these verses (21-18) left me somewhat lost at first until I utilized my
references from my NIV Study Bible and I was touched by verses 26-27. My NIV states that
little dogs means a pet dog in the home and Jesus' point was that the gospel was to be given first
to Jesus. The woman understood Jesus' implication and was willing to settle for "crumbs". Jesus
rewarded her faith by healing her daughter. Being surrounded by good role models of disciples
of Christ - attending church regularly, participating in Sunday School and other church activities
and ministries, and staying within the Word teach me on how to be disciple of Christ.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father,
I praise your holy name. I pray that you give me guidance on how to disciple to those around me
-- especially to those who do not know you. Also, I pray that as you have strengthened our
Church internally, you give us the will and guidance to reach out to those outside our Church.

After reading this passage I began to think of my son, Joshua. I thought of how Joshua depends
and trusts that Samantha and I will provide, protect, and love him always. Joshua has an
undoutable trust that his parents will do these things for him. So, therefore, since we are all
children of God, the Father, we should have an undoubtable trust and faith that God will provide,
protect, and love us always. This is what Jesus was telling us in this passage.
Jesus also tells us if we have something or someone in our lives that is causing us to sin or be
pulled away from God, we should separate ourselves from that object(s) and/or person(s).
So, then to humble ourselves as a child, we should not have any doubts that God, the Father, will
always take care of us and be with us always.
PRAYER:
Almighty Father, provider of all our needs, protector from evil and harm, and the loving Father
of us all, we ask that you help us to be humble as a child. Help us Lord to remember that we are
all your children and to have the faith and trust of a child that you will always take care of us.
And help us Lord to be strong enough and able enough to separate ourselves from those things,
and/or persons, which cause us to sin and not remain true to you. And we give thanks to you
God, the Father for giving your only Son to die for us, so that we may have eternal life. We pray
these things in the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ, AMEN.

I think that the good news in this passage is three fold:
1. Jesus commands all Christians to forgive. When we are in the company of other Christians,
we know that they will forgive us for the boneheaded things that we all do from time to time.
2. Since this is a command to be more like Jesus, we know that Jesus Himself will be forgiving
of our errors.
3. And now for the hard part: In this passage, Jesus directs each of us to forgive the errors of
others. We humans love to carry a grudge. But we can only achieve the grace of Christ by
dropping all of this negative emotional baggage. When we are free of these spiteful, petty
thoughts, the door is opened to the Kingdom of Christ.
PRAYER:
Lord, please help me to forgive the grudges that I carry. I will see Your light shining in each
person. Open my heart to receive Your abundant grace. I will use that grace to crowd out the
negative feelings that I hold for others. Amen.

COMMENTARY: [by R Birchall]
When we hold on to earthly possessions, it makes it tough to obey God's Word and teachings. In
some instances it would be easier for a camel to fit through the eye of a needle than for us to part
with earthly goods. If we put our faith in God and follow His word, we will be far richer in
heaven seated at His throne.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father,
Help us to put our faith in You. Help us Lord to understand that when we follow you we will
inherit eternal life. Amen.

COMMENTARY: [by B Stoddard]
This passage of Matthew confirms that as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ, we are all equal in the
eyes of our heavenly Father. God's promises will come to all disciples, whether you have just
accepted Jesus as your Savior or have been a believer for years. Life can seem unfair at times but
as disciples of Christ, we can be assured of His promises. In the kingdom of heaven, the last will
be first and the first last. God loves us all, equally! Praise be to God!
PRAYER:
Thank you, Lord, for your generosity and the many blessings you have bestowed upon us. Grant
us the strength we need to continue to be faithful disciples of Christ. Amen.

I believe what this passage is saying to us about living faithfully as disciples of Jesus Christ is.
For one thing, we must truly love and rejoice in our discipleship. Especially now in these times
of senseless violence, chaos, I think we all need to be greatly more aware of our calling to God
and His Son, Jesus Christ.
PRAYER: Dear Lord,
Help us to realize our calling to you. Help us to realize how much you love us and how much we
also love you. Amen.

In the parable of the two sons, the first son represents publicans and sinners. The second tries to
make others believe they have accepted Christ but only give lip service. We must accept the
Risen Christ in our hearts to start our journey of discipling. Reading God's Word and prayer
helps us.
In the parable of the vineyard it represents the nation of Israel coming back to the Christ they
believed in. We need to pray for our nation to come back to Christ in this way too. In the
passage it says all who stumble on the rock of truth shall be broken, and scattered as dust. The
victory comes in surrender of our lives and wills to our Father who sent his Son to die that we
might live with God in our eternal home.
PRAYER:
Thank you God for giving us your Son, Jesus to die that we might live eternally. Help us daily to
try to be your disciple with the help of your Holy Spirit. In Jesus' Holy Name, Amen.

This passage of scripture tells me that God is preparing a beautiful place for us in heaven. But
the key is that we must accept Him as our Lord and Savior -- and then we must share this love of
God with others!
As a disciple of Jesus Christ we must work together to spread the Gospel -- Share your love of
God with your friends, neighbors, co-workers -- tell them what Jesus means to you -- never be
ashamed of the Gospel of God -- Our Lord is looking for disciples who will work together with
Him in building God's Kingdom.
PRAYER: Dear Lord,
Help me to be everything you want me to be and then help me to share my love for you with
others so that they too can feel your love. Together we can put our love of you in action and win
others to Christ. Reach out your hand to Jesus - with the other one - bring a friend! Amen.

In this passage there always seems to be a tricky question. Jesus was able to answer these
questions. There are always questions in our life and sometimes we don't have the answers. As I
am personally being drawn deeper into the church, some of these questions are being answered.
Being able to ask questions can help a person grow stronger in the faith. I still have a lot of to
learn.
PRAYER: Lord,
Help us to see the way. Help us answer all our questions. Amen.

It tells me to remember the Golden Rule. "Do unto others as you would have others do unto
you."
We should humble ourselves more and put our lives in God's hands.
During this Lenten season we should follow our Savior more, trusting Him to lead us in all we do
and say.
PRAYER: Father in heaven,
Help us to be good servants, renew our faith and grant us heavenly guidance as Easter comes
again. Amen.

"The Lesson of the Fig" (Good News Bible) - Let the fig tree teach you a lesson. When its branches become green and tender, it starts putting out leaves and you know that summer is near.
Just as we may watch for signs of things to come in our gardens, so should we strive to be aware
of the sign of the times provided us by our Lord. Even though not one of us can know the day or
the hour and for the hope of His return.
PRAYER: Dear Lord,
Your name we praise; with longing hearts we watch and wait for that great day of days!

Don't be foolish, be prepared to enter the kingdom of heaven. Because you never know when
your time comes to go to heaven.
PRAYER: Lord Jesus,
I accept you as my Savior. I realize that I'm a sinner and ask for your forgiveness. I only pray
that you could give me the wisdom and courage to help save the non-believers thru my example
so that they can experience the place you prepared for us in heaven. Amen.

The parable of the talents contains a valuable lesson for us. In the biblical story talents meant
money. Today, we can also believe talents to mean our gifts and abilities given to us by God.
God has given us at least one talent to be used in doing His work according to His will. Just as
money hidden under a mattress gains no interest, or a person's muscles atrophy where not used,
our God-given talents will become useless if we do not use them. There is no room for excuses
such as I can't or I don't know how, or I don't have time. Venture forth in faith that God through
Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit will help you to learn and grow in your Christian faith as you use
your talents for His work. You will find your life filled with blessings when you put your talents
to work for Him.
PRAYER: Wise and Wonderful Father, God,
We thank you for the gifts and talents that you have blessed us with and we pray for your
guidance and power in using these gifts and talents to carry out the work that you have set before
us. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Serve all your brothers and sisters in God. Don't choose who to help, but help all. Listen to the
lonely, help the needy. Do these things without expecting reward. For your reward will be great
in heaven. As members of McMasters, there are many opportunities to serve through God.
Prayer groups, Food Bank donations, help teach a Sunday School Class, serve on one of the
church committees, help with the Thanksgiving Day dinner. But above all praise God for what
we have, and share it with others. Have you ever given a beggar money?
PRAYER: Dear Lord,
I just want to thank you for all I have. Help me to share unselfishly with others and not be
judgmental of those who need help. For you are the only true judge of man. Again, I just thank
you and praise you Lord for all your help and answered prayers. Please help me to help others
always. Amen.

When I was a child growing up in Turtle Creek, each spring was a time for serious spring
cleaning at our house. It was a family affair. All the carpets had to be taken outside, hung on the
clothesline and beaten with a wire carpet beater. The wallpapered walls were cleaned with globs
of pink, canned wallpaper cleaner. All curtains were taken down, washed, starched and placed
on prickly curtain stretchers. These were just a few of many chores. The end result was a house
cleaned and ready for our family's celebration of Easter.
When I read in Matthew 21 about Jesus driving and all who sold and bought in God's temple and
overturning the tables and seats of money changers, I knew He was cleansing His temple - This
in preparation for its being a house of prayer.
If material things begin to clutter up my life, I know He will be with me for a "spring cleaning."
PRAYER: Lord,
"Cleanse the temple of my soul so that it may be a house of prayer." Amen.

A disciple is a person who is learning from someone else. As these people learn and become
disciples, and each one teaches one, a domino effect will take place. Judas Iscariot was a disciple
of Jesus Christ. He was in the process of learning from Jesus, but never became a great disciple
because of his fate to be the one who betrayed Jesus for silver coins. Jesus knew this was going
to happen. He knew he was to become the Lamb of God, to sacrifice himself in order to save us
from our sins. Let us try to be long-term disciples for Jesus and not be a short-term disciple as
Judas was. Let us spread the "Good News" and become true disciples for Jesus Christ.
PRAYER:
Help us, oh Lord, to become disciples for you. Help us to gain the wisdom and be full of the
Spirit so we may lead others to your Kingdom. Amen.

SCRIPTURE: Matthew 26:6-13
COMMENTARY: [by L Baxter]
Throughout the book of Matthew Jesus tells of the plan that God has for the world, how we as
Christians must be very careful in our own lives to follow the path in which God has planned.
Jesus teaches his disciples that they also must be very careful to learn from his teachings. Jesus
tells many parables in great attempt for us to better understand about our lives and how we as
Christians should live.
In Matthew 26:6-13 when the woman pours expensive perfume on Jesus' head, she was showing
her pureness of heart. She was a woman with great admiration for Jesus. I believe when Jesus
told his disciples to "leave her alone, you will always have the poor with you," that he was
referring to their own state of heart.
At times I feel it can be confusing and hard, but yet very important to remember to live by the rules in which God has laid down before us. I pray that through Jesus Christ we will be able to follow his teachings with all his blessings and be able to become disciples for Jesus - learning from his Word, avoiding the hypocrisy of our own selves, in which, therefore, we will be able to spread the word to our children and all humanity so they too will be blessed and continue the prophecy of God.

Don't be afraid to confess your faith to others. There are many ways besides trying to become all
consumed with the meanings of the scriptures. I feel that if you have a good basic understanding
of what God wants from us as Christians, we may profess our faith in many ways - in our
behavior to others, in our deeds, the things we can do for each other - not because we have to,
but because we want to. So if you are not always able to say it, there is probably a good chance
you can do it (another type of calling).
PRAYER: Dear Jesus,
Provide me with the strength each day to be a witness to my faith, if not with the written and
spoken words of the past; but with my deeds and actions today, tomorrow, and for the days yet to
come. In your name, Amen.

SCRIPTURE: Matthew 26:17-29
COMMENTARY: [by D Simmons]
I see the forgiveness of sin as the major focus of this passage. The disciples had prepared for the
Passover as they had been instructed. During their meal, Christ told them He would be betrayed
by one of them, then He blessed the bread which was to be eaten as a representation of his body
and they drank the wine as a token of His blood that was soon to be shed for many for the
remission of sins. The disciples were in total disbelief that one of them would betray Jesus. All
except for Judas who had already made his "deal" and was waiting for the opportunity to fulfill
the task.
Christ went to this, the last supper, told the disciples of the betrayal and taught them how to hold
communion and the reason for it. In this passage, Christ lets us know that there is forgiveness for
sin and the promise of eternal life in his Father's kingdom.
Faithful disciples know the stories of the Bible and use them as a guide after which to pattern
their own lives and influence the lives of others. I am trying to learn more about the Bible. I'm
trying to become active in the church and am doing my best even though it could be better. I feel
Jesus is working within me to change me into a faithful disciple. I am slowly learning and
growing.
I woke one morning (seven years ago) and decided to go to church because of God's blessing -
Matthew. Then there were two. Hopefully, as they grow, they will learn and share and I will be
able to do more in learning, possessing, and spreading God's word. I believe if you're living as a
disciple of Jesus Christ, as the passage tells us, then there is forgiveness, even if there has been
sin along the way.
Prayer: O Father,
Please open our hearts and minds to learn your lessons and do your will. Please guide me and us
in this long journey. And thank you for the promise of forgiveness when we have gone astray.
Amen.

Our defense of Christianity today can be weakened in exactly the same way, if we keep our faith
a secret. When, in some sudden time of need, we reveal it to those who have heard little of Jesus,
how can we expect anyone not to be annoyed , or turn away. For that matter, if we have not
openly pursued our walk with Christ, how can we expect our own inner strength to be great
enough for the times of sudden tension and tragedy.
So please remember at this Easter time, we worship inside the church but our service starts
outside the church.
Glory be to all of you.

EASTER SUNDAY
March 30, 1997
SCRIPTURE: Matthew 28:1-10
COMMENTARY: [by Rev. Mattner]
Christ is Risen!
Thanks be to God!
The day we have been waiting for has finally come. It is Easter! We have made our Lenten pilgrimage. We have tried to discover what God wants and expects of us as His loving children and as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. As a popular phrase puts it, "Been there! Done that!" So now what?
Both Jesus and an angel tell us what comes next. In verses 7 and 10, we are instructed to go and tell. The next thing to do is witness to what we have seen and heard. It is not enough to work at our spiritual growth as disciples. Actually, that growth is not confirmed, nor is it firmly established until we go and tell, until we give witness to what we've seen and experienced, until we go and make other disciples.
The notion of witnessing may cause one's anxiety level to rise. But in both instances where followers are instructed to go and tell, that instruction is preceded with the words "Don't be afraid." Don't be afraid of what's happening -- Jesus is not gone, but He is alive -- and don't be afraid to go and tell because He will meet you where you will be going and telling.
There are all kinds of ways to witness, to tell the story, but the most effective, the most real
witness has a way of living, day after tedious day, in such a way that others get the feeling they
have looked inside a stinking tomb and have bumped into that unexpected angel. Someone once
said that being in the presence of such witnesses is like shedding your heaviest burden, stripping
down to your essentials and running breathless into eternity...with new found joy!
Prayer:
O Crucified and Risen Lord, by your death you conquered the burden of sin that drags us down;
by your resurrection you made known the victory through the mouth of an angel and then the
disciples. Grant that my mouth might also speak of your glory and that my life might run with
the perseverance and joy which only you can provide. Help me everywhere and always to be
your faithful disciple, witnessing so that others might also become your disciples; in your name,
AMEN!

As a church family, we are called and committed to minister to the needs of all God's creation, especially to the rejected, oppressed and misunderstood persons of our society and the world. We rejoice in Jesus' assurance that: "Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."
